How to Prepare for IELTS: A Practical Guide
IELTS is one of the most important steps for study abroad or immigration. Here is a practical, no-nonsense guide to preparing effectively.
What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is accepted by over 11,000 organisations in 140 countries — including universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and the USA, as well as immigration bodies. It tests four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Scores range from band 1 (non-user) to band 9 (expert user). Most universities require band 6.0–7.0; immigration programmes often require 6.0–7.5.
Academic vs General Training
- Academic — for university admission and professional registration.
- General Training — for secondary education, work experience and immigration to English-speaking countries.
The Listening and Speaking components are the same for both; Reading and Writing differ.
A realistic preparation timeline
- 3 months — if you are already at B2 level and need to reach band 6.5–7.0.
- 6 months — if you are at B1 and targeting band 6.0–6.5.
- 12 months — if you are at A2–B1 and aiming for band 7.0+.
These are realistic estimates assuming 10–15 hours of study per week. Cramming rarely works for IELTS.
The four skills: what to focus on
- Listening: Practise with authentic English content daily. BBC podcasts, TED talks, audiobooks. Take notes while listening.
- Reading: Read long-form English content every day — articles, essays, news. Time yourself. Do not look up every word; practise understanding from context.
- Writing: This is where most test-takers lose points. Learn the specific task types. Get your writing corrected by a qualified teacher — not just spell-checked.
- Speaking: Practise speaking on unfamiliar topics for 2-minute stretches. Record yourself. Work with a teacher on fluency and coherence, not just vocabulary.
